The Central Oregon Chapter of OSU Master Gardeners™, in cooperation with the Oregon State University Extension Service, will present the annual Spring Gardening Seminar, online only.  

 

All classes are accessible via Zoom webinars.

 

Pre-registration and $10 payment per class are required.

 

You can register for one or multiple classes at the links below.

After registration, you will receive a link to the online webinar by e-mail. If you cannot attend on the day of the webinar, the Zoom classes are recorded and can be viewed later. A few days after the online webinar is completed, each registered participant will receive an e-mail with a link to the recording.

BUSTING MYTHS: GARDENING WITH SUCCESS IN CENTRAL OREGON

you! Whether you're new to the high desert and overwhelmed by the unique challenges, or a seasoned gardener

session will not cover vegetables but it will get into proven strategies for growing trees, shrubs, perennials, and

annuals in our high desert climate. We will share valuable information on why our area is so challenging and what

GROWING VEGETABLES IN CENTRAL OREGON

Learn how to grow your own food. Yes, you CAN have a successful

vegetable garden in Central Oregon. We will cover Central Oregon climate, soil amendments, site selection, irrigation,

season extenders and other techniques, and recommended vegetable varieties to grow here.

Saturday 4/18, 10:00-11:30am:

NATIVE PLANTS AND BIODIVERSE LANDSCAPES

with Gail Langellotto

Native plants are an excellent choice for gardeners seeking to promote and conserve biodiversity. In this talk, we

will learn about (1) the science underlying the relationship between native plants and ecosystem function (2)

specific native plants that are excellence choices for Central Oregon gardens, and (3) how to identify and purchase

native plants at nurseries and garden centers with confidence. We will also touch on incorporating native plants into

existing garden landscapes, including maintenance and care.

Tuesday 4/14, 6:00-7:30pm:

WEED IDENTIFICATION AND MANAGEMENT

with Gordon Jones​​

Learn about managing difficult weeds in your garden, lawn, and landscape from cheatgrass to

puncturevine. We will review how to identify common weeds in Central Oregon so you know what you’re dealing with

and discuss their growth habits and ecology to target management and control. We will lay the framework for

integrated weed management and consider a wide range of approaches to both prevent and control weeds. You’ll leave

the class with practical ideas, resources, and inspiration to better control the pesky plants on your property.

Tuesday 5/5, 6:00-7:30pm:

HOT YARDS, COOL TIPS: FIREWISE LANDSCAPING 

with Amy Jo Detweiler

Join us for a practical approach to fire-wise landscaping. We’ll break down the basics of the home ignition zone, what

makes some plants fire-resistant (and others not), and how smart design and regular maintenance can make a big

difference. We’ll also walk through a few local case studies and share plant picks that work well in a fire-wise

landscape.

BOUQUETS FROM THE GARDEN

with Julie Schiedler

Learn how to grow buckets of gorgeous flowers to fill your home with beauty and fragrance all year long. Each season

brings new opportunity to bring the outdoors inside to appreciate the beauty of nature. We will cover the best flower

varieties to start from seed, the best bulbs to plant, and my favorite cottage garden perennials and shrubs. I will also

cover essential gardening basics to help ensure success. I hope to inspire participants to cultivate a passion for

beautiful garden blooms.
