Small white flowers in flat-topped clusters bloom in spring; 3-5 " diameter. Flowers give way in July to red, berry-like drupes which hold their showy color for about a month before turning black.

Thick, leathery, rough-textured, finely toothed, ovate, dark green leaves 2-5" long with rounded to cordate bases. Leaves turn dark green with purplish-red tones in fall.
