Fertilizer:

Young tree can use a slow-release granular fertilizer, a 12-6-4 or a 20-10-10 applied in early spring, older tree need none

Mulch:

Use well-rotted garden compost, manure, or shrdded bark applied in early spring

Provide a spot in sun or part shade with well-drained soil, mulch around base but not on trunk, shear or prune in spring for shaping, water young trees, fertilize in early spring

Winter:

Apply anti-desiccant in harsh conditions, mulch if not done in fall, check moisture level after winter thaws, remove heavy snow, avoid late pruning

Spring:

Prune to remove dead or damaged branches, apply slow-release balanced fertilizer, inspect for winter burn, monitor for pests
