Care Recommendations

Maintenance Level:

Medium

Fertilizer:

Needs a low-nitrogen, high phosphorous fertilizer applied early spring

Mulch:

Mulch 2-4" around base of plant to keep roots cool

Shade the roots with a ground cover or mulch, give consistent moist soil, fertilize, deadhead immediately after first bloom

Long Term:

Winter:

Pruning should be completed in late winter or early spring when buds begin to swell but
stems have not yet started to grow. Prune out
any weak and dead stems, and cut back
remaining stems to a pair of strong, healthy
buds. How far back you cut the stems will be
determined by your use. This group will often
flower on new wood again in late summer
or fall.

Spring:

Snip vines back to a pair of healthy buds about 1' above ground, remove dead or damaged stems

Summer:

These vines flower mostly in sprays along one-year-old or two-year-old branches. Cut off spent flowering branches immediately after flowering. This will help to produce the maximum amount of vigorous flowering wood and preserve the plant's natural growth

Fall:

Avoid heavy pruning, mulch base with 2-4" layer if organic mulch or shredded leaves, clean up debris, secure vine to trellis, fence, or support structure

General Care Comments:

Give partial shade, in early spring, cut back stems to a strong pair of buds about 6-12" above ground, clean away dead or diseased stems, snip off faded flowers, apply thick mulch around base, needs rich, well-drained neutral to slightly alkaline soil
