Care Recommendations

Maintenance Level:

Fertilizer:

Apply a light, balanced slow release (10-10-10) once in early spring

Mulch:

Pea gravel, stone , or pine needles, in winter

Allow soil to dry between watering, give 6-8 hours of direct sun, feed sparingly, in spring remove dead, winter damaged, or messy stems, apply mulch in winter, divide in spring

Winter:

Drainage is critical, stop watering, apply gravel, pine needles, or straw, cover is needed

Spring:

Cut any areas that had winter damage, give full sun, well-drained lean soil, apply slow release fertilizer, water sparingly, divide

Summer:

Use soak and dry watering method, give full sun, exceptional drainage, can deadhead, watch for pests

Fall:

Drastically reduce or cease watering, ensure well-drained, add layer of mulch, keep plant dry, can trim any dead, damaged or unsightly stems

General Care Comments:

In zones 4-5 may need to be treated as an annual, thrives in full sun, 6+ hours, needs well-drained soil, water deeply only when dry, needs little fertilizer, use mulch to keep dry, trim in spring
