Fertilizer:

Rather than using a fertilizer, apply 1" layer of compost

Mulch:

Apply 1-3" organic mulch, compost, bark chhips, or pine needles

Thrives in full sun, well-drained soil, water during droughty periods, cut back plant to low mound after first blooming, give light fertilizer in spring, divide every 3-4 years, cut back agsin late winter/early spring

Long Term:

Winter:

Do not prune, make sure plant has 2-4" layer of mulch, reduce watering

Spring:

Prune away dead foliage, apply compost, water only if dry, ensure good drainage

Summer:

Deadhead to promote additional flowering or cut plant back to a low mound, needs 1" water/week

Fall:

Cut stalks and foliage to ground or wait til spring, apply layer of mulch, divide if needed, water if dry
