If soil is poor, incorporate a thin layer of compost or well-rotted manure around plant in early spring, or use a well-balanced slow-release ferilizer

Mulch:

Shredded pine bark, pine needles, or compost, sprread arounnd the plant, when established none required

Cut back stems after flowering, also can be cut back to a few inches from the ground in late fall or early spring, give occasional deep watering, skip chenical fertilizer, instead apply a light layer of compost in spring, divide in spring if needed

Apply 2-3" layer of mulch, only water if completely dry

Spring:

Cut back old, woody, or dead growth from previous year, keep feeding minimal, divide if needed, ensure adequite moisture, good-drainage
