Mountainous and boreal regions of Europe extending to the Ural Mountains in Russia

Soil:

Easily grown in average, acidic, evenly moist, well-drained soils in full sun. Performs well in rich sandy soils. Once established can tolerate dry soil.

Usually none needed, but a balanced, slow-release evergreen or acid-losing fertilizer of 10-10-10 or 4-4--8 can be applied in early spring

Mulch:

Shredded bark or wood chips

Full sun, consistent moist well-drained soil, stake to desired height, watch for pests

Winter:

Water if needed, prune late winter

Spring:

Fertilize, occassional deep watering after establishment, routine pruning to remove winter damaged branches, and for shaping, monitor for pests

Full sun but may need afternoon shade in hot climates, deep consistent watering, pest monitoring
