Fertilizer:

Use a balanced slow release (10-10-10) in early spring

Mulch:

Shredded bark, wood chips, or compost

Divide when necessary in spring or fall to keep plants in check, maintain consistent watering, give good air circulation, cut back to ground in fall, apply fertilizer in spring

Ensure plant is hydrated before first freeze, if not done in fall, cut back plant to ground and remove all debris, apply a layer of mulch

Spring:

Clear away dead foliage, debris, old mulch, apply balanced slow release fertilizer, apply 2" layer of organic mulch around base of plant

Summer:

Keep soil consistently moist, give full sun, deadhead, provide good circulation, ligh fertilizer application in early summer, mulch to protect roots

Fall:

Severely cut back and remove foliage, cut back to ground, apply a layer of mulch, consider a 2-1-2 ratio fertilizer to encourage root development

General Care Comments:

Deadheading for additional flowering, full sun, consistent moisture, fertile well-drained soil, good air circulation

Powdery mildew can be a problem in hot humid conditions, spider mites in overly dry conditions
